Hi NYC cyclists! Happy National Bike to Work Day!

On May 15, 2009 people all over the country will be exercising their belief in the power of non-polluting bicycle transportation. New Yorkers will be leading this call for safer streets, cleaner air and more livable communities by riding our bicycles to our places of work across the five boroughs.

Here are some great facts about biking in NYC that can help you convince your friends and family to bike to work with you today and any other day of the year:

* The average bike commute in NYC takes about 30 small minutes. The average commute for all City residents is 45 minutes, almost double the national average of 25.5 minutes.

Translation: Riding a bike to work is the fastest option we have!

* A roundtrip 30-minute bike commute will burn about 440 calories.

Translation: Riding a bike to work is good for our health!

* The annual fixed costs of owning a bike (with insurance) are $5,569, the annual fixed costs of owning a bike (with insurance) are $263.

Translation: Riding a bike to work is affordable!

* There are 185,000 daily cyclists in NYC. That number is up from 113,00 daily riders in 2005 and 75,000 daily riders in 1992.

Translation: New Yorkers are catching on to how fun riding to work can be!

* New York City currently has more than 620 miles of bike paths, lanes, routes and car-free greenways.

Translation: Dedicated space for cycling is encouraging more New Yorkers to ride!

We will also be celebrating biking in the Bronx with a group bike ride and breakfast hosted by the Bronx Borough President. Meet up is at 7am at Poe Cottage.
